Position: Chief Engineer 

Location: Bering Sea; Pacific Ocean; Gulf of Alaska; Aleutian Islands 


Chief Engineer work aboard at-sea processing vessels in the Bering Sea, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands.  Responsible for the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of all ship engineering systems. Provides leadership and technical expertise to engineering staff and upholds all vessel, company and required safety regulations with regards to vessel and equipment.

Must hold an appropriate U.S. Coast Guard CHIEF ENGINEER license of uninspected fishing vessel. Position pays a daily guarantee. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Routinely inspects engines and other shipboard equipment to ensure optimum performance at all times.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of marine diesel engines, generators, refrigeration equipment, water making equipment, hydraulic equipment, conveyor belt systems, steering systems, electrical systems, and sea water pumps and cooling systems. May also repair equipment on board such as washers and dryers or photocopying equipment, and other miscellaneous electronics on a scheduled or unscheduled basis
  • Assists department personnel in performing work assignments as necessary. May install, maintain, repair, modify, or replace machinery such as steam engines, boilers, generators, water makers, steering systems, electrical equipment, and equipment used in the crew quarters, on a scheduled or unscheduled basis.
  • Supervises and coordinates crew engaged in operating and maintaining propulsion engines and other engines, boilers, deck machinery, and electrical, refrigeration, and sanitary equipment aboard the ship.  
  • Ensures compliance with applicable sections of the Safety Management System. Is knowledgeable and conversant on applicable policies and procedures contained in the SMS
  • Conducts Weekly safety inspections with vessel on board leadership team.
  • Conducts job observations on assigned crewmembers to ensure standardized training requirements are met; provides recommendations and feedback on performance
  • Orders spare parts, maintains all records onboard related to orders, inventory and receipt of parts.
  • Provides prioritized worklist to Technical Manager for each yard period as well as schedule for vendors and other crewmembers needed to complete work.
  • Stands engine room watch during specified periods.
  • Maintains all appropriate engineering logs, including maintenance records for all equipment onboard.
  • Responsible for the handling or transfer of all petroleum products and gases used on board the vessel.
  • Works closely with Captain of vessel to ensure all mechanical issues are addressed in a timely manner to minimize downtime or delays in fishing and production.

Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Must have 2 years of experience working as a Second Engineer or Assistant Chief Engineer on a vessel
  • Work 12 hours per day, 7 days a week in all kinds of weather conditions
  • Understand instructions and safety rules in English
  • Board and exit vessel without assistance by climbing up and down a gangway or Jacob's ladder
  • Capable of climbing and descending steep stairs and vertical ladders
  • Perform repetitive tasks for long periods of time
  • Repeatedly lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Share spaces with others including crew quarters, dining areas and bathrooms
